Our Approach: A Holistic View of Learning

Being in the classroom is just one part of learning. We address the whole picture: Kanam's work is organized around four concrete programs, each targeting a documented barrier to children's education. Every program is co-designed with school directors, families, and community leaders on the ground in Senegal.

🏫 Infrastructure

  • School Repairs & Improvements: Across Senegal, school infrastructure challenges take different forms. In rural areas, many public schools still rely on 'abris provisoires' — temporary shelters with no electricity or toilets, and roofs and walls that give way in the rainy season. In cities, public schools are more often built to last but have fallen into disrepair and missing basic facilities. Kanam works directly with school directors and local construction teams to carry out targeted repairs and improvements. Each project is chosen based on direct community need. A safe, functional school changes everything: attendance rises, teachers stay, and children can finally focus on learning.

📚 School Supplies

  • Connecting to the Digital World & School Supplies: Most public primary schools in Senegal still lack computers for learning, leaving children with little or no exposure to technology in the classroom. We create dedicated technology rooms with computers, opening up new worlds of learning for children. We also provide each child in partner schools with the supplies they need to participate fully in class.

🍽️ Nutrition

  • Nourishing Minds: A hungry child cannot focus or learn. Research on school feeding programs in rural Senegal has shown that regular, nutritious meals measurably improve students' cognitive development and ability to learn. Kanam funds daily nutritious meals at partner schools, cooked by local community members. The impact goes beyond nutrition: school meal programs dramatically reduce absenteeism. Families who know their child will eat are more likely to send them — and keep them — in school. Meals are also a daily moment of community, warmth, and belonging.

🤝 Mentorship

  • Kanam Mentor Network: Beyond the classroom, children need adults who believe in them. The Kanam Mentor Network connects young people with volunteers to guide, encourage, and open new horizons. Mentors commit to a minimum of one year, meeting monthly with their mentee.
